Harpswell Heritage Land Trust News in Brief

Nature Day Camp Dates: The Land Trust’s ninth annual Nature Day Camp for children ages 7-11 will be held Monday-Friday, July 31st-August 4th from 10a.m.-1p.m. There is space for 25 kids in the camp. The Instructor will be Rick Magnuson, who teaches math and science to Grades 3-5 at Waynefleet School. The campers will visit, explore and learn about 5 types of habitats in Harpswell. Annual Meeting:
The Land Trust’s Annual Meeting will be held at the Elijah Kellogg Church on July 11, 2006. The doors will open at 6:30 and the meeting will start at 7 p.m. After a short business meeting, Brownie Carson, Executive Director of the Natural Resources Council of Maine, will give a talk on the potential effects of climate change on the coast of Maine. The public is welcome.

Duck Decoys: HHLT member and summer resident David Sherwood of Bailey Island will be soliciting contributions for the Trust from his workshop at 8 Abner Point Road overlooking Mackerel Cove. Those who make a contribution of at least $100 will receive a premium in the form of one of the duck decoys that David carves and paints as a hobby.

West Harpswell School Garden:
The Land Trust’s new Community Gardens program will create its first garden in conjunction with the teachers and students of the West Harpswell School. Located at the east end of the school, the garden will have raised beds, benches for socializing, and a section for each grade to plant and cultivate. Both vegetables and flowers are planned. A schedule to manage the gardens throughout the summer will include kids, parents and supporters. Expert gardener Marsha Hilton Kingdon will assist the kids in their efforts. Parental involvement is encouraged. Visitors to the garden will be welcome.
