Harpswell Heritage Land Trust Acquires Easement off Cundy’s Harbor Road

HARPSWELL- The Quahog Bay Nominee Trust, a family group of cousins, has given the Harpswell Heritage Land Trust a conservation easement on 33 acres of mostly forested land running from the Cundy’s Harbor Road to the eastern shore of Quahog Bay.  The easement, located roughly opposite the Dingley Island Road, will be the 19th in the HHLT’s portfolio and the first on land in the Cundy’s Harbor area.  The Trust has historic preservation easements on two building in or near Cundy’s Harbor:  the Kellogg-Dunning House on Wissman’s Point Road and the Old Union Hotel (now the Captain’s Bed & Breakfast) in the village.

Keith Brown, President of HHLT’s Board of Trustees, said “The Trust is very please to have successfully completed its first land conservation project in the Cundy’s Harbor area.  We have been pursuing possible conservation projects in that part of town for some time.  We are grateful to the owners for their interest in conserving their land and thank them for their gift.”

Walter ‘Doc’ Phillips, Chair of the Trust’s Lands Committee, noted that “this easement will help protect the water quality, marine resources, and beauty of Quahog Bay for future generations of fishermen, boaters and residents.”

The land includes over 2700 feet of shore frontage with the only visible development a dock and small traditional boathouse.  The land is in a substantially natural, predominantly forested condition with areas of ledge and cliff on Quahog Bay looking out on Snow and Ben Islands.  The forest is a mainly softwood stand of Hemlock, white pine, spruce and cedar.  There are several wetlands with emergent marsh vegetation.
