Long Reach consists of 213 acres of upland forests, extensive salt marsh, fresh water wetlands and bogs. A mile of tidal shoreland on Long Reach extends along the west side, with a corresponding mile along Long Marsh to the east. Together with the adjacent 95 acres of the Long Reach Preserve to the south, and the state-owned, 200-acre Austin Cary Lot to the north, this land makes up the largest substantially undeveloped area of wildlife habitat in Harpswell. The adjacent marine habitat is considered of high value to waterfowl, wading birds and shorebirds, as well as possessing commercially productive mudflats. The agricultural heritage of this land is evidenced by remnants of old stone walls and of dug wells lined by huge stones.
