Yarmouth Island, 192 acres of high wooded island, guards the entrance to Quahog Bay. By its size and position and largely undeveloped shoreline, Yarmouth Island defines much of the character of the eastern potion of Casco Bay. Nearby Pine Island to the northeast and the small Raspberry Islands to the southwest are also included in the easement. A homestead area of 34 acres in the northern section contains several cottages and related structures. The remaining 158 acres is set aside as a natural area and consists of gently contoured uplands, wetlands, open meadows, a pebble beach, and mixed hard and soft wood forests. The island harbors a diversity of plant and animal life and plays an important role in the ecology of eastern Casco Bay. The islands have been in the same families' hands since 1910.
